Whenever friends come over to the jungalow (or see jungalicious pics on my Instagram) they comment that they’d love to have more plants indoors, but that they are plagued with brown thumbs. Well I have a confession to make. I, too used to be of the brown-thumbed kind (gasp!). But many years of insisting and I’ve figured out which plants thrive in my home and can tolerate (what can sometimes turn into) mild neglect. I have created a little graphic with all my faves. Here’s the low-down:
LOWEST MAINTENANCE: Dried plants (like the billy balls and the Eucalyptus) They provide just the right amount of nature with zero effort.
LOWER MAINTENANCE: Plants that live in containers of water (like bamboo or plant cuttings). Just place in a sunny window and make sure all of the water doesn’t evaporate.
LOW MAINTENANCE: Eternity Plant, Jade Plant, Succulent Plant and Snake plant — these planties are hard core. Water them every now again (soil must dry between waterings) and make sure they get some sun–and watch them stay alive–for, like, ever.
LOWISH MAINTENANCE: Philodendrons and Spider plants need weekly waterings but are not really all that fussy. If they start to look grey and wilted, they tend to be resilient and spring back to life with a bit of water.

I have a bit of a jungle going on in my house as you do. I was wondering if you ever have a problem with gnats? I don’t seem to have an infestation, but there always seems to be one flying around and when I get that one a new one comes along. Any tips for pest control?!

not to brag here, but I have a definite green thumb (thanks mom!) and having plants indoors makes all the difference. you can make little terrariums with just sand, pebbles and preserved moss (plus any other dried pods etc.) for zero effort “plant”. (i have one with echinacea pods I just posted on instagram)
My favorite easy houseplant discovery is maranta tricolor:

I picked one up at the LA flower market because I loved its red and green striped leaves. I have iffy luck with indoor plants, and after a month it is lush and thriving with one watering per week or less. Just had to share!
