Eclectic Double-Duty Family/Guest Room Inspiration 12

If you’re short on space, often times a double-duty guest room/family room is the way to go. One reader asked if I had: Any ideas for a family room that doubles as a guest bedroom without sending guests screaming for a chiropractor from the cramped futon?  So I put together this post with a day bed/trundle bed (that comes in both a full  and twin sizes) because it can be paired with real-live materasses that can be as comfy as one can afford. By adding an array of patterned throw pillows, the day-bed becomes a comfy couch for movie nights. Next, I added small ottomans and a cluster of coffee tables. This allows for easy transformations of the room’s function–the coffee tables can act as bed-side tables when guests take over the room–or they can even be folded and nested if the trundle is being pulled out and one is in need of extra space. The ottomans provide extra seating but can easily be moved around or repurposed as small tables if need be. The key to double-duty rooms is flexibility. To add to the eclectic vibe, I have included some vintage portraits of women (I wish I had wall space for these–I’d buy them myself), and a Mother-in-law’s tongue (plant)–one of the best natural air purifiers–all for, yup you guessed it–under $1000.

Daybed With Trundle $329

Mid century/ Space Age Style Nursery Inspiration 1  2  3

Mid century style can get very pricey, but a modern style nursery doesn’t have to empty out your savings account.  Here is a mid-century style nursery for under $1000–with nods to Spage-age and the Atomic Era.

Here’s how to get the look:  Use 50′s style pattern reproductions to make pillows, curtains and bedding for your little one–or if you’ve got a little extra cash to spend, scour Etsy for ready-made versions. Add some practical furniture with clean lines–Ikea is always a good place to start. Include some original 50′s style artwork and an iconic piece (like the Eames-style rocker) and include a modern mobile and some sheepskin or flokati throws/rugs to warm up the place.

As for paint color, keep it nice n’ white–or opt for very light shades of aqua.

Kitchen Inspiration: 1 2  3  4

One big reason for wanting to buy my own home one day is tile. I know that sounds silly, but how amazing is patterned tile?! I love the way it looks on floors, in showers and especially as a kitchen backsplash. I found this 4″ X 4″ Mexican tile with little blue and white triangles on each one. There are so many arrangements that one can put them in to create all kinds of fun and funky patterns. I created a chevron pattern with my virtual backsplash as the jumping-off point for this boho kitchen. I’ve also included an outdoor rug (I use one under my dining table in my kitchen and it’s a fun way to add color and pattern to the floor without tiling, or worrying about an indoor carpet getting wet or food stuck in it.) Then I added some fun, colorful and whimsical accessories. (Don’t forget to paint or stain those wooden Ikea chairs–each one a different color perhaps?)  Now just paint the walls an outlandish color–like yellow or green or even pink–and add some artwork from other rooms in your house. Add cutting boards, plants, plates, pots and pans to your walls and you’ll be ready to get cookin’–bohemian style.

Hit up World Market for affordable international accessories. Make your home feel cool, clean and collected. Include plants to breath life into your space. Add one or two Eames-era pieces–a chair here, an arc lamp there–and don’t be afraid of color.
