I have loved Lena Horne ever since I saw her in The Wiz alongside Diana Ross and Michael Jackson when I was 5.
I saw myself in her as a young girl (no surprise that, like me, she was mixed black, white and Native American). I loved to hear her belt and watch her twirl. I also loved her for being friends with my all-time celebrity crush Paul Robeson despite the friendship resulting in her landing on the anti-communist blacklist. I also admire her to no end for completely opening up racial barriers in the entertainment industry…and for being the definition of chic and class….
