How are you supposed to measure how much pasta to boil for one serving?

Eyeing how much pasta to cook right outta the box never really works. You either end up with a heap of leftovers or still a bit hungry. When I lived in Florence, the first time I saw Carlotta, my roommate cook pasta for 4, she took out the 4 plates she would later serve the pasta in, and filled them each with the dry noodles. She then poured the dry noodles right into the boiling water, and…Perfetto! Pasta for 4, with no leftovers.  I use this trick every time now and it works like a charm.
