As a designer I love to be introduced into peoples homes. I love to see how people live, and how aesthetics can vary amongst different classes, cultures, ages. . . Justina and I grew up going to Fresno, California to visit our fathers side of the family. What I appreciated about going there was that we would arrive- always without warning- and within about an hour the entire Blakeney clan would be congregated at Auntie Joannes’ house (pictured above) with wine coolers, music and food. Her house was (and still is) the meeting point for the entire neighborhood. What I didn’t realize growing up, was that my Aunt is something of a visionary- a collector- her 10 kids call her a hoarder- but I think she is an artist with a vision shared by very few. She even discovered a way to continue collecting and still host all 11 of her brothers and sisters and all of their kids- she moved the living room onto her front lawn!
