As a child my mother and I did lot of puzzles. I remember once when I was about six, she asked me whether I focused on the shape or color of the puzzle piece in order to fit the pieces together. “Both!” I remember telling her. Now, as a designer, every day I examine shape and color of many fragments and determine the best way to fit all the pieces together.
These shards from an archeological excavation in Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado bring me some sweet puzzle nostalgia. Aren’t they beautiful? So, what about you? In puzzles (and in life) do you look at shape, color, both or neither? How do you fit the pieces together?

I think i generally look more at how the picture fits together. I always find myself about two dust motes from the puzzle piece examining for details to see what might go where. :D
I love your blog! You girls are awesome!

With glue?
I saw this post, and it immediately reminded me of my conservation class – when we got to talking about ceramics, we all got small terra cotta pots, smashed them, then treated them as rare artefacts and put them back together again…it was actually pretty fun. I have still have my reconstructed pot somewhere.
As a designer, though, I’d have to agree. It’s all about fitting the various pieces (be they visuals, colours, logos, content, business needs, random ideas, technical constraints, whatever) together in a coherent way…
