Today I’m feeling inspired by Piet Mondrian. His search for simplification and his bold, decisive choices really speak to me. Lately, I feel like some of my own designs have been overworked and over ‘added to’ as opposed to restraining myself and ‘subtracting from’– leaving only what’s necessary.
Mondrian reminds me to be bold and to edit. Not that I’m moving away from my maximalist aesthetic, but I’m feeling sick of all the excess. Maybe I just need to clean out my closet. Does anyone remind you to simplify and go bold?
those nails are amazing!! :D and the cake~ so fun! as for simplify + go bold, i feel that way when i see some textile designs from scandinavian artists… especially marimekko + sanna annukka… controlled boldness with simplified lines/shapes.
I stare in my closet so often and think: what on earth did I buy that for! Loving the bold, colour block brights goin’ down here.
Amazing layout! I’ve been loving your blog extra a lot these days :)
@Suki Yes! Agreed! Marimekko has the same affect on me!
@Will Thank you sweet Will! Mondrian does remind me of you!
@KC Thank you! That really does mean a lot. I love feedback about my layouts, as a graphic designer, I do spend time thinking about and executing them, so THANKS!!
i absolutely love your blog!!!!

Nice, Justina! Have you read the story behind the Mondrian cakes? They were made at SFMOMA, along w/ some other fun desserts inspired by art in their collection: http://blog.sfmoma.org/2010/05/collection-rotation18/.
I really love what they did.
