It’d been a few years since I attended the Renegade Craft fair, and I was so happy I did. I saw quite a few friends and their wonderful wares and it was also fun to see a craftier side of LA on a beautiful day in a park. Some of the highlights for me were
1. The display tables at Andrew B. King’s booth were really neat. They were fashioned from slats of wood with holes in them and wine bottles.
2. I loved seeing what Cursive Design was up to. I wrote about them years ago when I worked as DIY editor at Venus Zine, and their goods have evolved nicely. I really loved a lot of their pieces.
3. Next up it was great to see my friend Victoria of Paper and Type. She shared a booth with the sweet Genevieve from Le Petite Elefant. These ladies both have serious skills and I scored some letterpressed Thank You notes that I truly adore.
4. It was fun meeting Bianca in person. She runs Terri Planty and creates terrariums that are out-of-this-world. As anticipated, she has an infectiously sweet personality and her stand was totally one of my favorites. Her grandma was there which was adorable and meeting her terrariums in person was a real treat, too.
5. I scored this Animals of North America by Small Adventure. Their booth had an outdoorsy vibe that I loved.
6. Lastly the Moveable Type’s Type Truck was is attendance. I loved the concept and the excecution was right on the nose.
All in all it was an awesome show–of course, as usual I have a few critical thoughts about it. Namely, some of the prices seemed really high, like necklaces made of fabric for $300+. Other issue I have with this and other craft shows is the the overall aesthetic of the show seems a bit homogenized, while many things delighted me, there was very little that was provocative, caught me by surprise or made me think in a new way (the Type Truck was a welcomed exception).
Did you go to fair this year? What did you think?
