Jason and I planted a potato plant for the first time about six weeks ago. As the weeks passed, the leafy green plant just got browner and browner. I gave up on it when the last leaf shriveled and crisped. As I pulled the dead plant from the soil, I felt a few small potatoes clinging still to the roots. Whhaaaat?? The deeper I dug into the soil, the more potatoes I found.
I felt like a child on an Easter Egg hunt. I knew that potatoes grew underneath the soil, but for some reason, It was sooo surprising that the little dwindling potato plant would have created any potatoes at all, let alone so many!
We cooked up the potatoes with our farmer’s market eggs the next morning. They were small (the smallest one was the size of a marble, the largest–about as long as an index finger) but boy were they yummy! I totally recommend growing growing potatoes!!

Yeah! That’s when they are ready!
When the leaves shrivel up and go brown!
I reckon the tastiest home grown vegies are
potatoes and tomatoes and onions.
(Onions take 8 months – that’s a long time!)

@will – we eat potatoes in the morning all the time here!! (Italians think it’s weird, too)
@Shauna + @shannon – indeed, they were!
@freefalling They were for sure ready– I’m telling you, I was shocked! We ave tomatoes too and they *are* awesome, gotta try onions next (we have leeks nd scallions, but no onions)…
