Being a thrifter means that I’m always out looking for treasures *and* bargains. People always ask me how it is that I am able to put together my homes without spending a fortune, the answer is–with a lot of research and a bit of ingenuity. This column I will share all my little secrets. I will create a room in different styles each week–all for under $1000.
This week, the room is a Moroccan-Modern living room. Morocco is one of my favorite countries. I had the pleasure of visiting Marrakech, Fez and Essaouira some years back–and the crazy beautiful colors, smells, music and food thrilled me. I would love a chance to get back there.
Here’s how to get the look: Using pallets (which I recommend you paint or even upholster) and cushions, a fuss-free low couch is created on the cheap. Add some throw pillows in the mix for comfort and pattern punch. The coffee table works well with low seating. Place the pouf opposite the couch to create a conversation area. Accessorize the space with the quatrefoil vintage magazine rack, the yellow vase, the brass camel, the Moroccan mint tea glasses and the chandelier to give the space a fun, intimate vibe. Tie the whole space together with a vintage Moroccan rag rug and a print from Matisse’s Moroccan period.
Now of course you may need a console or a bookshelf, that’s where you take items that you already have in your home a repaint them or upholster them to give them new life.
Add a few colorful textiles as window treatments (you could even use scarves that you already have), put it all together and you’ve got a mellow Moroccan style living space, for cheaper than a plane ticket.
As for paint colors, combine earth tones with pops of pink or blue. And don’t forget to add a bit of bling with some metallic accents. How great is that brass camel!?!

Justina,
This post makes my heart pound. I mean it. As a matter of fact, I’ve just discovered your blog, and the whole thing is like discovering a soul sister.
I love the palette low couch idea. The cushions are beautiful, and the idea lends itself to so much lovely variety!
Can’t wait to follow and read more… And huge congrats on the soon to arrive little one!

I wish I had seen this post last year when I was decorating my Moroccan sitting room. I specially like the color palette here… I struggled with color and finding the appropriate seating the most.

I love this post, and I wish I had seen it last year as I was decorating my Moroccan inspired sitting room. I particularly like the color palate here, I struggled with color the most. The seating options are just what I had in mind. I still need to get the tea glasses.
