Clearly, I have a girl crush on Nicole Valentine Don because I don’t think I’ve ever posted about one person twice in two weeks BUT, what can I say, I caught this ojos de dios installation that she did on her instagram feed and it was insta-love–I just had to share.
Ojos de dios (Spanish for Eyes of God) are made from yarn woven onto sticks, traditionally by native peoples of Mexico and South America (specifically the Huichol people). But it would not be a shocker if you’ve made ojos of your own at summer camp when you were a kid. The God’s Eye is a symbol of the all-seeing eye of God–it represents the power of seeing and understanding that which is unseen. They really remind me of ’70’s textile art that I love so much and I kinda put them in the same stylistic wheelhouse as my beloved macrame wall hangings and planters. Which reminds me, how great is Nicole’s dress?!
Nicole’s exhibit is currently up in Sydney at Australian stylist Megan Morton’s ‘the studio’ and she is also running two workshops at ‘the school‘.
It’s so nice to now know the history behind these woven ornaments that are so reminiscent of my childhood. I’d love to give them a go with my children. One more thing the dress IS super cute!

huichol art is one of my favorite forms and talk about colour<3 the most fave item has been the vochol
i have this tote from the nayarit trip a fwe years ago, and the most unlikely colors for me to wear at all, is one of my fave bags (quasi flourescent green y brown)

yes! it is all the frenzy right now. i have been seeing them in other australian blogs also. thank you for explaining the meaning a bit further. my spanish is pretty good so i knew the translation but was curious about the symbolism.
