I’m excited to introduce a new column here today called Like She Said which highlights words of wisdom from ladies I love. In the column, I ask creative women I love and admire to share an original quote that they feel is thought provoking, empowering, funny, or are important words-to-live-by. I then take the quote and design it into poster that reminds me of them.
First up is my friend Satsuki Shibuya. Satsuki is amazing. She has a very calming presence and hanging out with her is like taking a brain jacuzzi. She is great with both words *and* images and also…this girl can sing!
Her quote reminds me of several things–firstly, the mind/body connection and that when a freak-out moment is on the horizon, that focusing on BREATH calms both body and mind. The quote also reminds me to focus on the big picture. It’s easy to let little stressful, or even BIG stressful stuff dictate our moods, our decisions, our behaviors and especially our interactions with others–but to have the ability to go back to your breath brings you to a place of introspection, of perspective and of calm. I learned a lot about the importance of breath during my 26 hours of labor, but I’ve also started to remember to breathe in less momentous occasions, like say I’m running late and I hit every red light in the city, or if my credit card gets cloned and I have to redo all of my automatic-bill payments. A year from now it’ll all be water under the bridge.
Thanks for sharing your words of wisdom with us, Satsuki.
from Satsuki: (this quote is) from my morning meditation. a quiet time to reflect upon what it is that my spirit is sharing for the day. an intention that is set by my true self, not hindered by what the day has to unravel. pure & simply being.
For more wisdom from Satsuki, check out her blog and her twitter.
Words to live by. Funny, I was just mulling over a roadblock that might arise later in the week, when I realized it was somrthing I couldn’t control anyway. I would just have to be satisfied that what I had already done was more than enough. Now I’m going to put that energy into morning yoga…smile and Breathe. @aostudio9
Great idea for a feature, Miss Justina! Satsuki’s quote is such a nice representation of how she lives her life… her calm disposition is certainly contagious. Ahhhhh. I feel even more peaceful just breathing and writing this comment now. : )
