~Shannon Flaherty Randall
Shannon is one of my dearest homegirls. She is witty, resourceful, dependable, extremely thoughtful, easy to be around, really funny and smart. Super smart. She is one of those people that you’d be lucky to crash on a deserted island with because she’d totally share her coconut with you, and no matter how dire the situation got–you would be laughing the whole way through. I love her quote because it reminds me to listen for cues–it is only by listening that we can find our paths, and once we do find our path, it is vital to be brave to continue on it.
Here’s what Shannon has to say:
We’re all on a journey of some sort. So, when writing a quote for Justina’s Like She Said series, I wanted to share something to inspire each of us on our journeys as strong, creative women.
Joseph Campbell’s monomyth, or the hero’s journey, is a basic storytelling pattern found in narratives and character arcs throughout history—from Buddha and Moses to Luke Skywalker and Harry Potter. But when thinking of archetypal female heroes, famous fictional characters that come to mind are random: Sarah Connors in Terminator, Ripley in Alien, Alice in Wonderland, Dorothy in Oz. And while I love my female heroes of the fantastical, action-hero variety, I most love stories about the Erin Brockoviches, Amelia Earharts, Angela Davis, Rosa Parks and Dolores Huertas of the world.
So, I believe it is up to us to keep telling our stories and the stories of other heroic women; to think of the hero’s journey in terms of our own lives and our own character arcs; because we all have such epic stories to share!
Thanks Shannon!
