Where there are curls, not far behind there is undoubtedly frizz, tangles and a whole lotta strife. If you are blessed with curls than you will know what I mean. I am dead serious when I say that I probably have 3 times the amount of hair on my head than the average human being. We mixed kids tend to A LOT of hair, and often times–we grow up with mothers who have NO clue how to tend to it–so we learn how to deal with it ourselves.
I have tried MANY products on my hair. I’ve tried products designed for all types of climates —dry, weathered, treated, oily…I have tried products created with Black people in mind I have tried products created specifically for curls–hell I’ve even tried products made for horses! I’ve tried gels, oils, leave-in-conditioners, sprays, mousses, pastes, hair masks–I’ve tried flat irons (my mom even ironed my hair with a normal iron once!) I’ve tried diffusers and curlers, blow driers and towel drying–and after this many years of experimentation, I do believe I know my sh*t. So here it is. My definitive guide to the very best products for your wild curls:
BEST LEAVE-IN-CONDITIONER Mixed Chicks Leave-in-conditioner
leaves hair bouncy and light, removes frizz
BEST HAIR CREAM Shea Radiance Maximum Curl Defining Cream
really does define curls, leaves a pretty shine on my hair and helps with dryness
BEST CONDITIONER Herbal Essences Hello Hydration
love the smell, but also hydrates my hair really well
BEST SERUM Argon Hair Serum by Josie Maran Cosmetics
I use argon oil all over my body so it’s no wonder that it works on my hair to. I use the serum when I am wearing my hair up and want all of the little frizzies and fly aways to calm down.
BEST SHAMPOO Aloe Vera Moisturizing Shampoo by Jason Personal Care
The shampoo moisturizes really well and doesn’t leave residue on my scalp. It feels fresh and clean and no-fuss.
BEST OIL Coconut Oil
I brush coconut oil through my hair once a week in the bathtub and leave it on like a mask for about twenty minutes. It’s the best thing ever.
BEST SPRAY Rose Water
I have yet to find a hair spray that works on my hair, but I love the way natural Rose Water smells so I spray it on my hair on most days instead of wearing perfume).
Have I left out your favorite? Please share!!
*For mamas with mixed kids–brush their hair while it’s wet with LOTS of conditioner in it–don’t even get near your child with a hair-brush when their hair is dry!

Not blessed with one single curl, wave or piece of frizz on my head (a great disappointment to me when Julia Robert’s big curly hair ruled in the 90’s).
Dead straight hair like strands of spaghetti!
If I put one dot of product on my hair it plasters to my head like a bathing cap.

Thank you from one of the clueless mamas…my baby girl is going to love u & your recommendations…

oh good–be sure to brush her hair with conditioner in it only–no dry brushing!!

Hey, thanks for this!
I would be great if you told us your hair routine sometime too!

yes yes a thousand times yes!!
i started using mixed chicks leave in conditioner when you suggested it months ago. it is the only reason that i am able to wear my hair down now without it being huge and frizzy. i also use pantene curl enhancing spray gel on top of that to keep it under control.
absolutely love that you post these, because flipping through magazines looking for help is annoying since everything is for straight or wavy hair. And black magazines dont help me either since im mixed!
Justina Blakeney says
RIght?!? Mixed chicks is a total life saver! gonna try out the your pantene stuff now, too! wootwoot!

Ooooh–hooray for recommendations! I don’t have the curl you have but I have a ton of hair and wavy frizz. My hair seems to get “used” to whatever I like but my faves at the moment are Kerastase shampoo and John Masters Organics Lavender & Avocado conditioner. The tough part for me is the no brushing–my hair tangles like crazy. If I don’t wash it everyday and then dry brush it, I have to put it in a bun to avoid giant triangle hair. Anyway, thanks for the recs and I’m off to try coconut oil!

Yes yes yes!! Thanks for sharing your favorites.
I have to put in my two cents – I’ve just turned 25 and finally given in to the fact that I have to be a grown-up and tend to my crazy curly hair. My favorite product is Bumble and Bumble’s Brilliantine, a little bit goes a long way in defining my curls while keeping them super soft.

Great stuff, thanks for these recommendations! I’ve had curly hair my whole life, but have always tried to hide it by straightening it. I’m learning to embrace my curls and natural hair these days, so I love this info/ I definitely want to try to rose water! I’ve been using flax seed homemade hair gel, and it works pretty well. I’m excited to try argon and coconut oil!

Just wanted to say that it’s not just mothers of mixed kids. My mom is African and while my hair always looked good when I was a little, she didn’t leave me with the best hair care practices. After years of having relaxers and texturizers foist upon me in the name of making my hair more manageable, I shaved my head at 16 in protest and basically kept it pretty short for the next 3 years after which I ended up wearing dreadlocks for ten years simply because I thought that my “tough” hair wouldn’t grow in its loose natural state. Years later, I discovered some great natural hair bloggers, cut off my locs and started growing a head of healthy natural hair, my mother unfortunately has lost most of her hair to traction alopecia and overall mistreatment of her strands. I’m happy I will be able to pass along healthier more nurturing (and self-loving) care practices to my kid(s)!

wow, perfect timing. My hair product routine is sad and I only wash it once a week, so everytime I’m like damn, I didn’t buy new stuff. Now I have a list that I’m taking to the store. AND thank you for posting affordable, real options!

Oh goodness, curl products – so overwhelming! I have curls that I usually wear straight, but I also have a curly curl. That little curly girl has inspired me to start wearing curls again. My newest discovery is the Beautiful Curls line that I find at Whole Foods. I love it! I’ve been using the leave in conditioner and the fortifying hair lotion with lots of success. It doesn’t weigh my hair down like lots of products do. I’m also a fan of the kinky-curly line of products.

I have to start taking care of my hair a bit more. It seams that the water here in SF is different than in Germany. My hair became so dry. Thanks for this round up.

I grew up in the Bay area (Berkeley) and lived in Europe for a long time (Italy) and my hair was always much more dry in the states than overseas, too. Try that coconut oil!

I’ll have to check some of these out! My daughter is not biracial but her hair definitely is and it’s been a challenge to find the right product mix. Right now we’re using L’Oreal Cleansing Conditioner and Miss Jessie’s Curly Pudding and that works decently. I’ve tried Mixed Chicks but haven’t stuck with it for some reason.

This is awesome, I am literally in the middle of writing a post on a similar thing. I’m Mexican and Puerto Rican (Afro Caribbean on the Puerto Rican side) and my curls are mid-back length and extremely dry, so I feel your pain. I tried EVERYTHING in my teens but NOTHING has helped more than..leaving my curls ALONE! Washing it strips the natural oils my dry hair NEEDS so I just rinse in really well with water, working the natural oil from the roots to ends. While my hair’s still wet I’ll use a TINY amount of this balm http://glossylocks.com/hairbalm.html. It’s lasted me over a year, a little bit goes a long way. (Their conditioner is amazing too, http://www.100percentpure.com/HONEY-COCONUT-MILK-CONDITIONER-2oz-s/411.htm)
Curly hair strands are more vulnerable to breakage and damage than straight hair so I always stress the importance of using all-natural products with no alcohol and limiting chemical processes and washings. :) Love your post.

Curly hair girls and their products! I have gone through tons of products with my ringlets and now have that task with my daughter who has corkscrew curls. I found a really nice product at Target called Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus Curl & Style Milk. Yes it smells as yummy as it sounds and it kills the frizz and adds moisture and shine for about $10. Also what works well on both of us that I just LOVE but is a little pricey is Davines Nou Nou Pak. I found it on soap.com for $27.85. My hair looks amazing when I use this product. Soft, shiny, bouncy just gorgeous. That’s my contribution to the curly hair product dilemma!

You should also check out all of the Deva products. Their products are specifically for curls and vary based on the type of curl. Their salon in NYC (Devachan) is also great! They cut your hair dry to make sure the curls look the best.

I love to use the Mixed Chicks leave in conditioner, then top it with a mix of Argan Oil and Aloe Vera from Trader Joes – weightless, grease free, shine!

I too wear my curls proud. I love my curls and the best products that have worked for me is Ouidad. I have tight curls and very thick hair. Ouidad is a little more expensive, but it is so worth it. I used to straighten my hair everyday to the point that my hair was just friz. Now, my curls are bouncy and I love just letting be free. I have not straighten my hair in like three years.

Also use coconut oil as my first layer of styling product and leave it in. Then pile on five or six layers of creams and gels. My hair can take it.

Justina! I just found this older posting on favorite hair care for curly haired ladies! I just wanted to share after years of frustration as a young person and young adult with loads of curly hair my Ah-Ha’s and saving grace showed up after reading “Curly Girl” by Michele Bender. Her biggest tip for curly haired women is to never use shampoo and all the reason why. Only wash with conditioner. She also provides a lot of wonderful home recipes to care for curls. I stopped using shampoo 5 years ago and I found great benefit and happier hair! Thank you for posting.

I am not mixed, but I do have crazy curls and frizz that I battle daily. I used to cry myself to sleep over the dry brushing look. My hair gets pretty poofy….thank you for your suggestions. Where do I buy most of these? I wanna try them all because I will find something that works and then it’s discontinued, or stops working after a while!

Hi the products you list sound great, but they all seem to be brands that are not available in the UK? I loved Tigi Foxy Curls shampoo and conditioner but yet again no longer available here!! ?. The styling spray is but with all 3 products together my hair was WOW. I loved it. Now I use John Frieda frizz ease s’poo & cond but nowhere near the same effect.

Hello Justina! Good product suggestions but you have missed my favorite GKhair Serum. The best I have ever used to fight my dry and frizzy hair. It creates a protective shield over each of my hair strand leaving a soft and smooth finish. Best to be used before blow drying when your hair are slightly damp to produce the perfect results. The best cure to a soft smooth finish. I always keep it in my hair care arsenal to keep my hair strong, healthy, soft, shiny and beautiful. Just love it. :) <3
