I’m in a small town in Denmark called Ribe–it’s the oldest town in the country. The evening when I arrived a circus tent was hoisted up–it looked so beautiful and fun…
and then this morning when I went to go and have a closer look–it was gone! Just like that. The circus has always been fascinating to me. In fact, as a little girl I remember very distinctly wanting to be a trapeze artist in the circus. The romantic idea of traveling from town to town entertaining, wearing crazy costumes and hanging out with animals has always appealed. There is also a certain mystery and darkness that circuses carry with them.
I was thinking about the circus and home decor and it occurred to me that when I see circus themes in the home it usually is for a child’s room–so I decided it would be fun to imagine a circus-inspired space that was sophisticated and had the playfulness and mystery of the circus, but also the great vintage wooden elements, the gorgeous thick stripes, the rope, the animal details–but in a more grown-up way. What do you think? Could you live in a circus-inspired space?

I’m down with the drum major footstool pillow…I love the sort of African mud cloth feel to the fabric, and the imagining of magical circus performers without the smells.

Great post! If you want some more circus in your life, consider ‘Water for Elephants’ for a summer read! I picked it up at the thrift store and wasn’t that into reading it but once I started, I couldn’t put it down! It has all the magic, mystery, history, and fun you would expect and some romance too! Happy Summer!

Hi–I clicked the links for the footstool and star pillow, but they seem to be broken…would you happen to have the sources for these? Love this sophisticated take on the circus.

Hi this post is over a year old and I’m afraid it looks like the shop went out of business. Good luck finding similar items. Etsy is always a good place to start looking. Warm regards, Justina
