I’ve shared some of my mother’s wisdom before, and today I want to share with you some of my father’s. My pops is super smart–he is one of those super brainiac types who happens to also be REALLY good with people–perhaps growing up with 13 brothers and sisters helped a bit. He knows how to make conversation with anyone and managed to make his way from growing up picking cotton in California’s Central Valley to a PHD from Harvard and beyond.
My dad has always said to me: “You can be your own best friend or your own worst enemy” and lately, I have been meditating on this bit of wisdom and how true it is. When I don’t treat myself with kindness, when I beat myself up, when I don’t allow myself to be free, be me or just be–I recognize that I am not being a good friend to myself, and then I check myself (before I wreck myself..hehe.)

I’m just delighted with your posts! One of my father’s most important advices that I took for life is “don’t deepen your roots too much, they can limit you”, in the sense that we should always be open for changes in order not to get stuck.

My dad would drive my sisters and I to school on Fridays (he worked 10 hour shifts Monday through Thursday so always had a three day weekend to hang with us), and as we climbed out, he would tell us “Be good, learn lots, and don’t slam the door!” That advice has carried with me. Being good is much more than not getting into trouble, learning is something Daddy taught us by example, and slamming doors is just rude.
Your dad sounds like an inspirational guy :) good advice!

For me, it wasn’t what he said but what he taught by example. Don’t lie, respect people, have boundaries, be ethical in everything you do, and work hard. He’s a hard act to follow. We just celebrated his 90th birthday and he’s still inspiring us by example. I hope I’ll be as courageous in facing my own mortality. Your dad sounds extraordinary too. XXOO
