When I moved to LA one of the first things that I noticed was the special quality of light. I don’t think that it’s a coincidence that the film industry is here–there is such a wide sky–like 180 degrees, and an vast openness that, even after having visited many pockets of the world, I feel is unique to Southern California. I snapped these photos of Jason over the weekend–they do remind me of Hockney’s work–and it made me think about how much where I live affects my art and my sense of space and color. Have you noticed this as well? Like Georgia O’Keeffe is so New Mexico, Basquiat is so NYC and Hockney is SO L.A. It’s interesting to look back on my own body work and think about how it has changed, not just as I grow and mature–but also as my geographic locations change. Do you think your geographic surroundings affect your art? How?

These are so gorgeous! I wish I could live in California, it’s definitely a magical place :)
I never thought about what that meant for the film industry but you are probably right!!
These pictures are so pretty- the colors are intriguing. To answer your question, yes I do think so! I’m not much of a paint or photo taking artist, but I like to think of myself as a writing artist; where I am, most definitely influences my writing. It plays a role in my thoughts.
Absolutely.th eight the air the physical geography. And it feels like there is a multi.generational connection, a pull to certain ancestral lands. I felt home just seeing Central Europe from a train or plain…especially Switzerland…the land itself, the curves and strutting of the hills, called to me…likewise, my spouse whose roots are mostly Native American, always felt and feels the pull of the plains in the states…which always feel dry, brown and brittle to me, and rich and golden to him. The question I guess is what draws you to it, both for nesting and for inspiring, and what places do you hide from.
first of all, these pictures are gorgeous!
and yes, my surroundings have a huge, huge effect on my work. when back in nz, my paintings were super bright and colorful, as for the very special, very bright there. here in berlin, I am getting more fragile and muted with color choices, for example.
completely, sometimes i’ll walk down a street in NYC and the light will hit me just so, and i’ll think “this right here is a perfect moment” and it never seems to end. I spend my days searching for those moments.
I hear what you are saying (and beautiful photos), but Hockney is not always ‘so LA’. Sometimes he really is ‘so Yorkshire’: http://www.royalacademy.org.uk/exhibitions/hockney/
You usually take fantastic photos, but this is art. I would suggest putting them on your walls immediately, but this is not family picture territory, anyone could proudly display these! :)
I live in London and those very English, foggy days, when you can’t see the top of the buildings seems to inspire me more than this nice, but unusual real-hot summer. Also, I’m pretty sure that one could locate you roughly just by looking at your work.
Now I wanna go for a swim.
