We celebrated Ida’s first birthday last weekend with a very mellow birthday party in Griffith Park. Hanging out at parks is one of Ida’s favorite things to do so we thought that a park bday was the perfect solution for the low-maintenance party that we wanted to have. We threw out a bunch of blankets onto the grass, ordered little sandwiches and flatbread pizzas from one of our favorite local bakeries, Atwater Village Bakery, got some party hats, star sunglasses, and a piñata from our local party store and set up near the Sunday drum circle so we could have a built-in live band ;) My only real DIY effort was the cake this time around, that I made inspired by Ida’s love of citrus and this cake (truth-be-told it’s the first time I made food inspired by one of my food pins–ain’t that a shame!?! haha)… it actually came out tasty (and I’m usually not the best pastry chef).
We hung out there all day long as friends and family popped in and out to hang out, catch up and give our little munchkin birthday kisses.
The piñata was a hit (bad pun majorly intended).
The hoola-hoop got around…(now I’m on a roll..)
The only real fail of the day was that the gold ‘1’ and star balloons that I got looked a helluva lot like errrrrr… cocknballs. What can I say–you win some you loose some. hahaha.
These cloches kinda saved the day and kept the bees and flies off our mini cupcakes.
Chocolate lipstick is the best kind of lipstick.
Cute overload was in attendance.
It was a real blast! Keeping things mellow and (mostly) stress-free was definitely the way to go this time around.
Thanks to all who came out to celebrate with us, and thanks Shauna for the beautiful photos.

Absolutely loved looking through Ida’s birthday pics!! Was Mary not there? If not, this must mean she is back in Cph! I’ll give her a ring in a bit… She may be jet-lagging (?)… Wish Dan and I had gotten to say “Goodbye” before you returned to the U.S., but I think we were out of the country when you headed to Paris (or to some other spot?). I follow your Blogs, and am enjoying them all, regularly now that we are back from Montner, France (spent July there with no Internet). Lotsa Love, xxx Denice

Looked like such a fun, chill birthday party. It was refreshing to see that you didn’t succumb to all the outrageous, overly designed birthday theme kid = parties that are all over the internet. Good to see that old-school parties with a pinata are still out there. happy birthday to your little one!

Thanks so much! Yes it was a old-school style affair. Drum circles and pinatas–the way to go :)
