A stunning solution for the low-maintenance plant lover is to add a nice, big fat green Agave plant in a jar with water-the bigger the better!
So long as the plant gets some indirect sunshine, and you refresh the water every couple of weeks, the agave plant will thrive, grow roots, and get huge. Not sure about where you live but these plants grow like weeds here in SoCal–they are everywhere!! Just remember when removing the smaller plant (called ‘pup’), leave a small piece of the stem that connected it to the mother plant–so another ‘pup’ can grow in its place. I love seeing the roots of the plant coil and twist in the glass jar.
World Market has these pretty and affordable recycled glass vessels perfect for this.
But you could also use any old carafe, or a simple cylindrical glass vase like in the first photo. I even think they would look amazing as a centerpiece on a fancy dinner table, where would you put one of these pups?

Great way to use pieces of my glass collection. I can see a lovely grouping catching the light on the coffee table. Love the recycled glass!

Hi Justina, those look GORGEOUS! I’ve always wanted to try this but I have a couple Q’s – first, would this work with an aloe plant? I have the most overgrown one in the backyard and would love to bring some color inside. Second, I thought with succulent propagation you had to let the cut part dry first… is that not the case if you’re putting it in water?

My sister and I grow aloe in water no worries, one is surviving in my very dark bathroom even. Such a hardy plant.

Wow! I just saw this post of yours and I know’s been about a year since you wrote this post. Thanks for sharing this information, I recently bought an agave plant for our balcony and when the pups sprout I will definitely try this out. I have an old recycled glass jug that would be perfect for this.

Can you take an existing, healthy smooth agave indoor plant and put it in a large glass vase? I’m worried it will shock or kill the plant.
