For all you curly girls out there, you know that growing curly hair to be super-dooper mermaid-hair long is quitea feat. My hair has never been this long before and I’m loving my long locks right now. But every now again when I feel like switching things up, I LOVE wearing my hair straight too. It makes me feel fancy, of French or something. It’s the perfect way to completely (and non-permanently) change up the vibe for a few days if feeling a little bit meh, oui oui?
I went to a salon to get it blown straight (and then they had to flat-iron it so it wouldn’t be straight but puffy–a three and a half hour long ordeal). I just put a bit of Josie’s Argan Oil hair serum in it (especially on the ends) each morning and covered it with a towel while I showered. There was a lot of swooshing of the head involved, a lot of hair twirling, and many a selfie. I apologize to anyone I subjected that to. I wore it like this pretty much until it rained over the weekend.
Having straight hair was SO fun, I’m even considering getting a Brazilian Blowout–have any of you tried that? Do you feel like your hair stayed healthy? In the mean time I may be heading back to the salon soon–I miss all that swooshing.

OMG, you look SO cute with straight hair. You should definitely do this more often(even though it sounds like a lot of work).

amazing! any tips for growing out curly hair?
Justina Blakeney says
um, never cut it. haha. it’s been 5 years and I’ve only had one trim!! No dye either, ’cause I think that really dries it out. And I use coconut oil and argan oil on it!

Wow, your hair is gorgeous! I love it curly, but it looks stunning straight too. I have curly hair and end up chopping it off once it reaches shoulder length because I’m sick of my bathroom looking like I shaved a poodle (I shed). I am really trying to grow it out this time, your hair is definitely my inspiration.

You have amazingly long hair.
I have a relaxer but my friend does Brazilian Blowouts and loves it. Pricey, but she says it’s worth it.
Good luck!

Ah, so jealous. My hair is naturally straight as can be. No amount of heat or product can get it to hold a curl for longer than about 5 minutes. Even a perm doesn’t stick (I’ve tried, many many times, long after it was socially acceptable to be perming one’s hair). Even though it’s a lot of work, you’re lucky to have both options.

Love this! I have super long curly hair too and coconut oil is my best friend. Maybe its time I get a blowout? So pretty!

Guuuuurl… You look amazing with straight hair!

Hey Justina, Love this post!
I have long curly and super thick hair too and I’ve tried the brazilian twice. The first time I loved it and when it washed out after a couple of months my hair was back to normal. The second time however is a different story, maybe it’s because I went to a different salon or my hair was just too fragile but it seemed to really dry my hair out. It’s also really expensive since hair salons love to charge by length and thickness. I say give it a try and decide if it’s for you, but find a really good salon.
Good luck and your hair is gorgeous straight or curly!

LOVE! I’m a curly-haired girl and growing it out is NEAR imposs! It reaches a certain length, and then frays into a mess of split ends…so I trim it, and then try to grow it, but the process happens all over again. You’re my new hair-spiration with this post! <3

Love it…I “recognized” that girl on Pinterest. Haha. You look amazing! Usual though…
I am curly, though not as curly as you…About 4 months ago I tried straightening it. I love it. It’s actually so much easier. I wash my hair once a week. Spend about an hour straightening it in front of Netflix {touch up in the mirror after} and done for a week. My curls only last about two days before they look freaky…
I get a lot {a lot} more male attention too. Though guy friends tell me it’s my imagination…
Luck!

My daughter who is also mixed race, had a Zerran treatment done. It is completly vegan and natural without any harmful ingrediants. We used the Reallisse treatment to soften and loosen her natural kinky curly hair. They also have a straigt version called Reform. Here’s a link to their website. We had ours done with Amber at Surrender Salon in Long Beach.

You look crazy sexy but I’d advise being careful with heat. I flat ironed my hair once a few years back and some pieces never went back to normal. I had to trim a lot of ends so I didn’t look nuts. The sucky part is I didn’t even like how I looked with straight hair. Boo!

I have dead straight hair.
Not a crinkle, wave, pucker, scrunch, whorl to be seen!
Yet still I could not abide standing and drying my shoulder length hair with a hair-dryer and round brush day after day.
It was soooooo tedious.
So I chopped it all off and now I look like – if you’ve ever seen re-runs as a kid of Gomer Pyle – Gunnery Sergeant Vince Carter !!??!
Now I feel like such a whiner when I hear it took 3 hours at the hairdresser and 5 years of growing for you to swish your locks.
You look like a dead-set spunk!

I *love* your curly hair, but that straight look is awesome, too! And that length, wowza!
I’ve been growing out my curls since 2012, and I can’t wait to see how long my strands will be in the next few years!

I have very curly hair too! Not as curly as you but.. still super curly and sometimes difficult to manage. For me the brazilian keratine is one of the best hair inventions so far! The hair looks so healthy and low maintenance BUT.. it is not very healthy because of the excessive Formaldehyde.. What I do is to do it once or twice a year, especially during the more humid/ warm months, where the frizz comes out. Never every 4 months! If you’re in NYC or if you have any specific question, this girl is great with curly hair.. she’s the one that works mine http://www.embracemessyhair.com

I have very curly hair too. And I only straighten it once in a while because I used to straighten it all the time until it dried. Rather than gettin a Brazilian blowout go to a Ouidad salon in Santa Monica an ask them to give you their version of a Brazilian blowout. Ouidad is a salon that specializes in curly hair an their products although pricey are my favorite.

Luckily, my hair is natural straight. I only use the flat iron on special occasions. You’ ve done an amazing job straightening it. I’ve read about the Brazilian blowouts but it can be a little pricey for a young girl (my friend was interested – having a curly hair)

I missed this look on IG, but I’m glad to see you here. Change is fun, isn’t it? Like everyone else said, you’re just plain gorgeous. The texture of your hair is icing on the cake, either way. I can totally appreciate the swoosh factor you mention and sometimes a blowout can require less maintenance depending on what you have to do to keep the curls fresh.
That being said, however, I’m so totally in love with your curls that I’d hate to know you chemically altered them in any way. It’s a slippery slope and your hair is perfect. Period. Maybe I’m biased though. I’m just now returning to my natural wavy/curly hair and I relapsed when I was growing out my gray. I wish I hadn’t. My kids and other family members have hair similar to yours too, and I suspect I’m taking all this a little personally. What does YOUR family think ? (since you’re putting the question out there!) :-) XXOO

Justina! You are an inspiration girl! A long time ago I saw a picture of you sitting on the couch with super short hair and I always said that if I ever cut my hair, which is the same texture as yours, that I would do that exact cut and now I cannot find that picture anywhere to show my stylist. Do you have any idea what I’m talking about?
Thank you and wishing you continued success. ♡♡♡
