If I owned this house…what I wouldn’t do to this kitchen. The floors would go, the cabinets would go…I think even a wall or two would come down. But alas, I don’t own this kitchen and so I’m limited to the changes I can (or want to) make. But over the weekend I did a couple of little things that made a difference (to me at least!) We finally got a round kitchen table (we got the simple pedestal table from CB2). I’ve been wanting one forever. I grew up eating around a round table every day with my family and felt it was very conducive to conversation. The rectangular table that we had before was nestled in the corner and so when the three of us sat around it to eat, we were facing the windows and not each other. Now we can all sit around the table, and even have room for a couple of extra people if we have company.
I also screwed a fruit crate right into the wall for extra storage of our produce–and I love how it looks. I put an Ikea picture shelf beneath it for onions and garlic and stuff like that. I can actually imagine a whole wall in a kitchen with crates along the en like this. Or a cluster of them at least, wouldn’t that be fun? I also am pretty enchanted with the Senegalese basket I bought at the DTLA farmers market over the weekend. I love how massive it is and the triangle motif gets me every time. I’m still considering changing the floors in here because the grey tile just really bums me out…but we’ll see…

the little changes that make all the difference — a crate to house your fruit/veggie vignettes, and bringing in the new table shape was just the right move for that kitchen!
does luda like it?

I’ve wanted one my whole life. Every day, my family and I ate around a round table because I found it to be a great place for phrazle talking. The previous rectangular table was tucked into a corner, so when the three of us gathered around it to eat, we were looking out the windows rather than at one another. Now that everyone can fit around the table, we even have space for some more guests if we have any.

Boy do I feel ya’ on the rental kitchen woes! Mine drives me nuts! But these small happy changes hold us over in the mean time. And one day when we own a place we’ll have had plenty of time to think about Exactly. What. We. Want. !

Rental Sweet Rental :-) Love your sunny kitchen, love that sunny little girl! If your landlord/lady had any sense they would say ‘here’s a pile of cash – go ahead knock some walls out, in fact knock yourself out Justina!’

What about one of those indoor outdoor rugs to cover up the ugly grey tiles?
As well as having them on my verandah, I have one in my entrance way.
They are really easy to sweep and vacuum and with your little one dropping food on the floor, you can take it outside and hose it.
I have an lovely bright orange one – we have the worst red mud in the area I live and the rug hides a multitude of sins.
