It’s fun to think of simple DIYs for the holidays that would add a fun element to your home decor or be great as a gift for someone. I got to thinking of ugly awesome christmas sweaters and thought they could make some really interesting, textural vases. The funny thing is is that I actually really LOVE the couple of OTT holiday sweaters that I have and I just couldn’t face cutting into them (like, I might need that red glitter thread reindeer vest one day…it is Italian wool after all). Luckily, I have some pretty fun and festive socks, arm bands and headbands for the chillier months that were perfect for the project. Some of the socks slide right over the vases I chose and didn’t even require glueing or cutting!
Find a variety of jars and vases; even old jam jars and drink bottles work well.
Round up some of funkiest and chunkiest woolly warmers from around the house – the sock that you’re never going to find its mate or something holey that you can re-purpose without feeling too guilty. You could also head to the thrift store and find really outrageous sweaters or scarves this time of year!
Luckily some socks are so stretchy and fit right over the vessels; all that is required is tucking it in at the top. Others, you’ll have to cut to size by measuring it around your chosen object and then glue with craft glue nice and tightly.
I decked out mine with hearty flowers that survive in almost any sort of weather; carnations are just as daggy as holiday sweaters and I love them just the same! What would Justina do? She would line the bottom of the vase with small stones for drainage, add potting soil and a succulent on top; something that you can nurture beyond the holidays and made with love!
What you’ll need:
Old vessels; bottles, vases, jars, etc.
Fun, fuzzy, fluffy woollen bits; socks, scarves, sweaters
Fabric scissors
Glue
Flowers or succulents for the finishing touch
What you’ll do
1. Choose which vessels you want which fabric pieces to go on
2. Cut to size
3. Glue onto vessel Et voilà!
