Last year my sister approached me to see if I wanted to collaborate on a very special design project. She was going to be designing one of seventy homes that were former military homes that had been empty for decades in partnership with Volunteers of America. These homes would be a given a new life, decorated by volunteers and then filled with homeless single mother veterans and their children. I was honored at the opportunity to join in on such an amazing cause.
I approached World Market to see if they would join us as well and they immediately stepped up to the plate and generously donated thousands of dollars worth of furniture and accessories to the home. On a pretty tight budget we are thrifting, painting, and DIY’ing our way through the rest to get it ready for its new family. Above you can see a mood board and some of the pieces that were donated from World Market. Since we don’t get to meet the family before they move in to the home, we are playing a bit of a guessing game, but just trying to create the best space we can with the resources that we have. We want the home to have a relaxing, homey vibe. We want it to be fresh and kid friendly, warm and really functional. We don’t know the ages of the kids or anything, so we are keeping the kids room really age and gender neutral focusing on functional–but still fun.
We started the install this week.
Here are a few peeks:
This mirror is one of my favorite pieces in the house so far. It is truly so gorgeous and it’s on sale right now. I’m thinking of buying one for the studio.
We painted the ‘headboard’ for the master bedroom using negative space…It’s going to be so exciting to see the home come together…
I will be sharing more updates along the way…The big reveal of all 70 of the homes is on Valentines day, so we only have about 10 more days to finish everything up!

How great to see design being used for those in need! Love the plant and pot in the corner in the third photo! Any info on how will recipients be matched up with recipients? And is there anything similar going on for single fathers or other homeless vets who aren’t parents?
Kudos to World Market for partnering with you. Just wish they’d be more open about their manufacturing standards, or at least respond to questions about where some items are made–until then, I’ll probably try to go with businesses like Ten Thousand Villages that are more open about their partnerships with artisans in other countries.

Good for you and for those in need! We all need to spend more time thinking about how we can help others. Inspiring for sure!
