Our bedroom at the Jungalow By The River is a total mess. Ceilings are still popcorn, our box-spring is still covered in plastic and the hideous mousy brown carpets are still in effect. We can’t afford to redo the bedroom until a little later on so for now I’m looking for affordable solutions to the bedroom that will have a big impact. I’m starting with the headboard. Here are a few ideas I’m toying with. I love the idea of dipping into my textile collections and hanging two panels on curtain rods.
A fold out screen like we did in this bedroom is a fun idea.
Here we used a can of paint to get the job done.
And a painted canvas will to the trick as well.
Take a peek at some of these ideas, and let me know if I’ve missed anything? Do you have a standard headboard or an alternative one. Is your alternative headboard comfortable? It’s so important to me that the bed be super comfy. The above ideas in the collage are pulled from Chairish where I’ve collected a whole slew of alternative headboard ideas. Check them all out here.

Thanks to seeing a picture of your bedroom years ago, when we moved in to our new place I did this with favorite fabric I sewed together with a branch and some mirrored garland:

It cost me $30 in total to buy the fabric and use what we had around. Since we’ve never had a bed frame or a “real” headboard, it’s fun to see what we can come up with every time we move into a new place. Thank you for the inspiration!

Yes! I love the curtain idea. We have a standard headboard, and I put a piece of art above it, but the sizing is a little weird and kind of bugs me. I’ve been thinking about taking it down and putting up a curtain rod with some pretty fabric. I think it would add some softness and hight to our small bedroom too.

P.S. When are we gonna get a tutorial on that beautiful painted peach pointed cut out?

I like the thought of the curtain idea; you can switch up the colors/fabric ,and it will be easy to take down if you decide to do something totally different later (like a standard headboard). But I do think for now it’s easy and not expensive – depending on the fabric – of course!

Love the textile Idea and the painted wall! Well they are all wonderful, love the old window, but anything glass above my head scares me a bit in earthquake country. Can’t wait to see your final decision as i am sure it will be wonderful!

Justina, I definitely love the curtain idea with the painted canvas. I have the feeling that you will always have summer into your bedroom :) and as Arlene said, you can easily take it down when you will decide to do something different. If you are still on the renovation part, maybe you will think to add even a small stylish colorful rug, handmade from wool by 70+ lady artisans in Kathmandu: http://feltballrug.com/inspiration .Our social story is here: http://feltballrug.com/meet-the-team/ Thank you!

I have never owned a headboard, so I love unusual headboard ideas.
Currently, I have a matchstick blind (dark, natural wood) unrolled, with a bit rolled at the top giving it some heft. I really love the texture and pattern of the small wood pieces tied together, it feels a little exotic!
I’ve had this up for at least 12 years and enjoy it still!
