If you’ve been hanging out at the Jungalow for a while, than you may know that I’ve been playing with patterns for years. I was self taught in this arena and have unorthodox methods of creating patterns so I was VERY intimidated at the thought of putting my patterns to use on real, live accessories for the home. I knew I could design a cool pattern for a blog post, but would it work for the ‘real world’ too?? Would I know how to make the print-ready files? How would I figure out about scale, repeats, file formats, oh my!! I felt out of my element but creating a home collection has been my dream for so long that when faced with a real opportunity, I knew I had to take a leap of faith…
And now, about six months since I took that leap, I have some eggs that are about to hatch. Very exciting eggs, I might add. My first wallpaper line for the inimitable Hygge & West will launch in about a month, and, quite honestly I can’t believe it’s actually happening. My designs will be right there along with designers I truly admire, from Rifle Paper Co. to my girl Oh Joy!.
I have learned a TON along the way, too. Since Hygge and West screen prints all of their papers by hand, I had to learn to design my patterns using very limited color palettes. As someone whose aesthetic is largely based on layering color upon color upon color, this was no easy feat. Working with Aimee and Christiana (the owners of H&W) was wonderful–they are super knowledgeable and have great taste. In the end I designed over 30 patterns to get to the five designs that we will be launching with. It was an arduous but very gratifying process.
Once we all agreed on which designs were the strongest, I made one of the smarter moves I’ve made this year and hired a designer to help prep all the files for the printer.
…and her name is Ida.
Just kidding. But Ida was very helpful in critiquing and in deciding which design she wants installed in her bedroom. My badass designer (I love you Jesenia!!) did all of the super technical work to make sure that all of the line-weights were perfect, all of the repeats were done correctly and helped with the scale, angles, fine tuning. It’s a very mathematical process and makes my head spin a little, I’m not gonna lie. This was a great lesson for me. I didn’t have to know how to do it all myself. It’s OK not to DIY every darn thing. The more my business grows the more I learn just how important delegation is–even the design stuff that I’m used to figuring out and taking care of on my own. My wallpaper (and my sanity) is MUCH better off in the end.
I haven’t seen the finished papers yet, they are being printed as I type and we are shooting the lookbook images this week in San Francisco. I’m CHAMPING AT THE BIT to see, touch, smell, share and then install my new line of wallpaper at the Jungalow.

Oh wow, that’s exciting! Congrats, and I will be waiting impatiently to see your designs. I love Hygge and West, even though mostly in theory-wallpaper intimidates me a bit, even though I spent half of my childhood surrounded by it, and loved it too. But I look at it A LOT. I Pinterest it to no end. I remember your bathroom wallpapered in Otomi pattern..I was so happy and surprised, because that was the same exact wallpaper I was gonna use in my bathroom(but I chickened out of it, or so it seems. sigh)
then you just need the renter’s wallpaper!! very low commitment!! haha!
