If you have a room that gets lots of direct sunlight, a jade plant might just be the perfect house plant for you. A shrub-like succulent with shiny, jade-green leaves, jade plants are fairly easy to grow as long as they get lots of light, and not too much water. In climates like Southern California, they’ll thrive outdoors too- we see huge ones around here- some people even use them as hedges! By withholding water once the days get shorter, you can encourage blooms, and be rewarded with pretty star shaped flowers in the early spring. As an added bonus, in Feng Shui, jade is said to bring prosperity and money, so placing it near the front door of your office or home can attract prosperity. A beautiful plant that can bring in more $$? Win, win!
GET THE GREEN: Jade plant (Crassula ovata)
WATER: Allow to dry between waterings, keeping the soil moderately dry. During the winter months, water less, but do not let it get overly dry.
SUNLIGHT: Direct sunlight for part of the day.
PLACEMENT: Southern window where it will receive at least four hours of direct sunlight.
EXTRA CREDIT: Move away from windows at night during the winter to avoid injury from the cold.
WORD OF CAUTION: According to the ASPCA, jade plants are toxic to cats and dogs.

Aha, so that’s how it’s called!
I have one right now. Picked a fallen branch on a beach in LA, put it in the water. It gave roots and all. Now I just need to plant it properly..
I hope it will work its magic in the backyard too)) Very helpful post, thank you Justina!

My Jade is one of the oldest plants I own! Its huge and in a pot…can’t image what it would do if and when I ever put it in the ground!

I have a jade plant!! I leave it outside on the porch so naturally I forget to water it.Glad that’s a good thing!! It’s actually doing really well, though not as full as the one pictured here. It’s sort of growing and trailing down the pot/table.
I have a problem with teeny spiders making webs in it and something eating its leaves (maybe the spiders?). Maybe I need to get some insecticidal soap..definitely before bringing it in for winter!

Spider mites killed my jade plant. By the time I took it to the nursery and asked what to buy for it they told me it was too far gone. Just letting you know so you can take action fast.

What a fabulous Jade plant. My husband and I bought a Jade plant the day after we were married as a gift to each other. It grew like mad, always healthy and wonderful. After 15 years, it just sarted to die, we tried everything to no avail. Since then, we have looked on and off for another and have not been able to locate one. We live in a small city right in the middle of Missouri. Does our difficulty in finding one stem from where we live or are Jade plants harder to find than they used to be? The one we purchased was from a local green house no longer in business, so our options are few.

For a future post, I would like to know more about hens and chicks (I think that’s what they’re called). I treat mine the same as all of my other succulents but the leaves keep shriveling and falling off. It won’t have any left soon.
