Pad Peek: Megan and Todd’s Mid-Century Boho Home

When Megan and Todd Walsh first met, she was working on an interior design project and he was selling a piece of furniture on Craigslist- it was love at first site. Within a few months they had started their business, Atomic Furnishing and Design– finding pieces that need a little TLC, and refinishing and reupholstering them together. Their mid-century ranch-bungalow in Asheville, NC reflects their love for mid century furniture, which Todd has been collecting for 20 years, and vintage boho pieces, like persian rugs and macrame.

Megan describes their home in three words: “Colorful- Modern- Bohemian”. From their hanging macrame shelf, to their vibrant furniture and mid-century art, Megan and Todd’s home is filled with drool-worthy vintage finds from their ‘thrifting adventures’. “We are surrounded by our passion and each and every piece in our home has a story”.

“Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve enjoyed staging and designing spaces. I remember arranging my bedroom furniture on a monthly basis” says Megan, who went on to major in Interior Design. “I came across my passion for thrifting while working at an antique warehouse. I loved watching furniture dealers curate their booths with their latest finds. It wasn’t long before I became one myself and was hooked when I found and sold my first piece”.

For the first year and half after they started their business, Megan and Todd didn’t keep any of the furniture they found on their scouting trips for Atomic Furnishing and Design. “Once we moved into this house, we decided we would start bringing home some items that needed a little more love. Everything in our house we have either fixed, upholstered, or refinished to bring it back to life”.

Adopt An Idea: Why should floors get to have all the fun? Small rugs can double as colorful wall hangings! Attach the rug to a rod or dowel, or sew on a strip of velcro, to distribute the weight evenly and avoid holes and tears.

Of Todd, who used to work selling Persian rugs like this one, Megan says, “(his) background is in the remodeling industry, but I always joke around with him that he is more of an interior designer than I am. He has such a good eye”.

The colorful 1960’s Rya rug is their most prized treasure. Megan writes “It’s the perfect blend of colors and it feels great on your feet too. We bought it from a couple in their 70’s, who had it hanging on their wall since they bought it in the 60’s”. It’s no surprise then, that the living room is their favorite room. “The floor to ceiling window allows the natural light to completely illuminate the space. We decided to let the rug, furniture, and artwork be our main sources of color in here. The colors contrast so well with the painted white walls. We also love adding different elements into the space, like the metal artwork, macrame, and of course, plants”!
