If you love plants like we do, chances are you’re spending a pretty penny at your local nursery — but not just on plants, on planters too, which can be even more expensive than even the most exotic of plants.
In the past, I’ve gotten my planters at Sunset Nursery, Ikea and in the Flower District in L.A.. They all have good selections, but I was never totally satisfied, nor could I ever find exactly what I was looking for at decent prices. I really like the cylindrical planters in both white and terra cotta and they are pretty hard to come by. Often you can find the pots, but no saucers, and since I like to keep terra cotta indoors, me needs saucers.
Also, a lot of times I find pots with no drainage hole, and that won’t do either because when water sits at the bottom of the pots, the roots rot and the plant dies.
Well, yesterday I had a meeting in Gardena (about 25 minute drive from the Silverlake/Echo Park area), and one thing I like to do when I’m in a new area of L.A. that I haven’t explored before is check my handy dandy Yelp to see if there are any nurseries in the area. Sometimes plants and pots are more affordable if they are a bit further out. And instead of a great nursery, we came across the best place for pots.
Pottery MFG has by far the biggest selection of planters I’ve ever seen in my life. They have everything you can imagine.
They have cylindrical mid-century style planters in both the shiny and matte options in every size and color imaginable with the saucers. They are kinda like the Gainey ones that I’ve never splurged on. Their prices are really good. About 40%-60% cheaper than they are normally.
Also, they have great customer service. They will also put drainage holes in pots for you! I mean, this news made me so happy!!
This was a small selection of what we came back with…The whole outside area has factory seconds and has pots for really, really cheap. Some of them have small chips or hairline fractures, but they’re all just a couple bucks for the smaller ones! And even the huge ones, ones that can run over $100 normally, are around $30.
They even have talavera pots!
Needless to say, very worth the 25 minute drive. If you have any spots you like to but pots, we’d love to hear! The comment section could be like a directory for people who don’t live in L.A. ;)

Great post, thank you!!! Did you happen to notice if they had MCM planters with metal or wood stands, like the Modernica ones?! I’ve been hunting for a more affordable version of it!
Justina Blakeney says
I didn’t see any with stands, but I feel like the stand part is pretty easy to make if you have the pot!!

i cannot overstate how badly i needed this post and exactly at the best time. i work for a small design firm in NYC and we have a client who saw some pots at a boutique in LA and they were like, oh we got them from a random place south of LA. based on the images you posted, i saw the planters we were looking for. crossing my fingers they will ship to NYC. just had to stop to say thank you because you may have just solved a problem we’ve been dealing with for weeks! thank you justina!

Such a helpful post. I have been looking for such a place in LA!
In the San Diego area – I love Green Thumb nursery in San Marcos for planters. Amazing selection and great prices too – http://www.greenthumb.com/
Looks like they actually have a few locations in LA Area – Canoga Park, Santa Clarita – but have not yet visited those.

Thank you so much! I bought a MCM in the Valley a few months ago and have been looking everywhere because I don’t want to pay $200 for a 20-inch pot from Modernica or Crate and Barrel and very few places seem to have the simple mid-century cylinder planters!

OMG THANK YOU for this! Sunset nursery can be sooo expensive for the mid-century mod style I like, and the price excludes the saucer! I’m definitely going to check out Pottery MFG. I’m assuming I don’t need a wholesale license to purchase from them.
Thanks Again!

Thank you so much! I’ve also purchased some from a company I found on instagram @ThePottedEarthCo. However they sell their pots as a set which comes with a mid-century mod planter stand, plant, and free delivery for local orders. The price was well worth the convenience!

Ok well if you are going to be in Gardena friends then you have got to but some plants for those pots at Sunflower Farms on Western. This is the most magical nursery. My kids absolutely love it here and I kind of let them run free!

I love the assortment of planters that you showed in the pictures above. I’m going to be adding some things to my garden in the spring. I will have to see about buying some new planters as I only have one empty one.
