I love vintage, colorful, boho rugs. (I’m calling them ‘boho rugs’ but most of them are actually kilim rugs from Turkey.) I like to use big ones to help define spaces in large rooms, I use small ones in the bathrooms and kitchen as mats. I layer them, I buy them to use to upholster old seat cushions or to use as table runners. I pair them with plants and get all jungalicious.
I have many of them {some (like my husband) might say too many} but I’m always finding them as such affordable prices on eBay and Etsy that I can’t help myself. It’s probably an addiction, akin to accidentally finishing off an entire tub of ice cream while watching a scary movie, but hey–at least they’re low calorie :D
Some of the rugs pictured above are runners, which I love to use for layering and can be found at really great prices. The pinkish rug in the plantastic pic up top is a runner and if you put it on the edge of a room and then layer another rug on top it can add a punch of color and pattern and you can get a lot of bang for your buck that way.
When searching for rugs on eBay and Etsy, I use search terms like “vintage kilim rug,” (also try spelling Kilim with an ‘e’ : “Kelim”), “vintage Berber rug” (those are Moroccan and have a different look but are also really beautiful) and “vintage Anatolian rug.” On eBay I try and actually do the auctions (instead of ‘Buy it Now’) because in my experience that’s how you get the best deals.
Also, most of the rugs are in shops from international sellers, but don’t that let scare you off. Oddly enough I find that shipping is often even more reasonable than shipping costs within the U.S. and am usually surprised with how quickly things arrive. Every once and a while I have received rugs that smelled a little strange — or too much like Febreze or something, but that’s quickly remedied by hanging the rug outdoors for a day or two.

Hei Justina, you’ve mentioned that you use kilims also in bathroom. Wander how long might kilim serve in a humid place and what will happen with it if my family will actually use it as a bath mat and dry their wet legs on it
Hi Erykah! Good question. most kilim that I have are made of wool, but for the kitchen and the bathroom I find ones made of cotton. The cotton ones are easy to wash and while overtime, their bright colors do fade I find that they still work well as mats. Hope that helps!
