This past month we kicked off our new artist feature series on the JUNGALOW with the amazing multi-disciplinary artist Kenesha Sneed. Before launching four of her beautiful fine art prints on our shop, she came by our studio for an afternoon cocktail & chat, giving us a little insight behind her work for us to share along with her prints.
A Southern California native, Kenesha grew up in Palmdale, lived in Venice Beach during college and now works in her studio and resides with her boo, Ben Tetro, in Altadena, at the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains.
After graduating from OTIS, Kenesha spent 5 years as a digital illustrator and art director. She had always been drawn to the ceramic artist community culture and soon found relief from the screen by taking classes at Xeim.
Kenesha now successfully holds space in both the digital and handmade artist creative communities, expressing herself with pixels and clay – firmly determined not to choose either or, but instead have a full plate of each. She hustles, jams and creates on her own terms and pace.
A day in the life of her one-woman-show starts off with coffee and is followed by a balancing act of responding to emails, shipping out orders, computer illustration and design, and time in the studio making ceramics for Tactile Matter, her home wares line. She is living the side-hustle-turned-full-time-gig dream.
While the final product is fresh, colorful, and fun – the process of working with clay can be a messy, so Kenesha brings good juju into her studio by burning incense in her quirky lady ceramic holders!
Kenesha’s illustrations and ceramics (mugs, pots, plates, pitchers and a new to the family – hair picks!) have a coastal-desert-modern vibe, influenced by all of the places she has called home. Her personal experiences are also reflected in her art – shining a light on women of color in a positive, happy, carefree, quirky, vibrant way.
Other inspirations include all things plant life, her extensive library of art books, the poetry of Maya Angelou and other creative women including Aiesha Mannle, Sarah Blank, Ann Friedman, Aminatou Sow, Allison Kaylor, Georgia Tribuiani, Carolyn Pennypacker Riggs, Ria Leigh, and Lauren Machen (to name a few!).
We are so thrilled to feature her work and are looking forward to visiting with Kenesha again soon!
