I was feeling inspired by the host of women on Instagram I’ve been seeing who have been showing themselves unfiltered and un-photoshopped, un-styled and just raw and real–stretch marks and all. I thought it was about time I bared all as well — of my home this time though. I just walked around my house and snapped photos with my phone without cleaning, styling or moving anything at all. This is just real life at the Jungalow.

This is what our home looks like *most* of the time….stretch marks and all. I still love it — even when it’s crazy and messy. This just looks like us.

Thank you.

This was really just what I needed. I moved to a new place a few months ago and feel like a total schlump because my place isn’t picture-perfect. I’ve been trying to take a break from “decor porn” lately because my place is actually quite nice but it’s also an actual living space that a real human lives in (plus 3 pets). It’s so nice to see a beautiful AND lived-in space. I’m so over “styled/curated” perfection all the time.
Thank you for this!
Kim says
THANK YOU! We’re all human and our homes are meant to be enjoyed; not simply photographed. It’s helpful to just LIVE in the moment sometimes and not see ourselves through a lens or filter. That said, your home is eye candy even when it’s not spiffed for the camera.
Diana says
Girl I totally have a squatty potty too…I always feel super self conscience and embarrassed by it, but it totally works!!!
Geri says
Thank you for being a genuine and real human being, we all can relate to this on some level!! Things are not always perfect :)
Sierra says
Thank you for showing all your imperfection, homewise… We all have to live and it’s great to see someone show what their house really looks like! I mean it still looks fabulous!
Sasha Frisbie says
Thank you so much for this! I love your design, but seeing this IRL mode made me love your style all the more!
Sel says
There are spaces in my home that are neat and tidy and there are spaces that are messy. I stopped berating myself because every single space in my home wasn’t picture perfect and I started taking pleasure in my daily accomplishments – my number one daily accomplishment, loving and caring for my family and friends.
Rashleen says
What a Relief! Have to confess I invite people once in 15 days so that I can come out of my laziness to clear my house and present them a neat and clean house. Ta Ta Daa..
Leslie in Oregon says
Your house looks absolutely wonderful…beautiful and lived-in (and not messy or chaotic)! We have had a green-and-white kitchen with open shelves for the 32 years we have lived in our current home, and I still love it. Your new bathroom looks even better as pictured in this post (after studying your last photographs of it, I was wondering where the toothbrushes went), and your other bathroom is gorgeous too. Your house reminds me of what the first home we owned could have looked like and shows me much of what I hope we can create in our next home. One question: where do you keep all your papers (including records) and books…or have you gone paperless)? Thank you for showing us beauty IRL.
Justina Blakeney says
Hi Leslie! We have two secretary desks in our dining room — that’s where we keep our bills and papers like that. We also have a lot of older papers and files and things like that in our garage. My work stuff is all at my office/studio so that takes away quite a bit of the papers that would otherwise be at the house too.
Thanks for your kind words.
xoxo

I swear I want to hug you after I read this post. It is such a great reminder that life is not glossy (and you are not a failure when it isn’t!) Thank you!

YES! I sometime find myself getting a complex looking at all these perfect styled house online while sitting in my crazy family mess. Or wondering…. what does it look like when the toilet explodes or the four year old is doing “dirty scientist” in the kitchen. Thanks for being real!!
Melissa says
Thank you so much for sharing! I’m super busy and I’ve been trying to find the right amount of cleanliness that makes me happy, while being reasonable about not spending all of my limited free time on chores.
Sarah says
This just made me feel a whole lot better about my life. Thank you.

This post is wonderful. I’m in awe of your considerable talents but am even more impressed when you show us the real, unpolished parts of you as well. Life is not an Instagram post!
Pri Pri says
Ah what wonderfulness! So nice to see that stylists are real people too. I know that sounds insane written down, but too often I beat myself up for having dishes in the sink/on the dining table, an unmade bed, or whatever and it is not the end of the world. Or rather, it is real life and beautifully styled perfection is not how anyone (other than my friend who freely admits he has OCD) lives. Thanks for continuing to make this blog since a welcoming, inclusive space.
Tania says
I love this post Justina! Even in “real life” your home is amazing though! :)

Did you take my doc bronners, squatty potty, and assortment of plants where I’m not sure if they need more or less water for your photo shoot? love it!!
Debra says
Our bathrooms all have squatty potties! Such a nice reminder that we do not live in glossy pages and it’s ok!

I would trade you anytime Justina…Your home looks happy and beautiful and lived in and loved…
Nache says
I’d trade too! The unfiltered is just as beautiful as the staged!!
Han says
We need so much more realness, just like this. Thank you, your home is absolutely beautiful and because you’ve shown it in its normal state I feel more able to relate to it, to be glad for you that you have it and to feel a similar sort of home-joy is achievable for me. In short, the pics make me feel positive emotions rather than negative ones.

I guess this means my house is…a disaster! Your place still looks clean. Or maybe I have too many things! :/
Erik says

Love every bit of it! Looks lived in, loved and genuine. The set up photos are wonderful and inspiring but seeing how it actually WORKS in real life makes your home seem even more gorgeous!

This is so awesome. Would kill for that entry way! Thank you SO much for the amazing feature…

I can’t tell you how much joy this brings to me. I’m a designer/decorator who hesitates to bring people to my house because I’m not happy with the way all the time. I have two small children and my house is a mess most of the time. I’ve been wanting to do a real life profile to go counteract the image of perfection and break up the facade…and this has inspired me to do it. Thanks, Justina.

nice to see a real home lived in!!
Amy Madeline says
Justina, you rock. Our homes are meant to be lived in and it’s ridiculous to avoid showing how they are actually used! Thank you for always keeping it real :-)
Diana Lopes says
This is a nice way of looking at it, most homes do look a little more normal most of the time, regardless of how organized you are!

Viewing pictures of other people’s homes can be very inspiring. Even if you don’t have the same style as someone else, you can still find tips and tricks to implement in your own home.
Marisa says
Thank you so much for sharing! It makes me feel so much better and normal! Your home is beautiful styled or not – you can tell there’s so much love there!
Megan says
God damn your house is gorgeous!! The tiling blows me, and I could give a sh*t about random stuff lying around… I feel like realness like this – you know, a real life house – is equally inspiring as a super styled, sparkling home (maybe more as it’s definitely way more relatable!).
I hear about ‘influencers’ saying their content has to be beautiful because it’s their business, their livelihood, etc… but I think a whole new world of marketing should be built off images like yours.
Thanks.

This was great! I’m an interior designer and I always feel like my house should always be perfect, like a show home, but we actually live there,so that ain’t happening with two boys who are a teen and a tot. And there is no full time maid, sooo… this was awesome to see. Your home is still beautiful and inspirational.
