The last twelve months have made us all reexamine how we use the spaces in our homes, but what about the spaces right outside of them? They’re an extension of our livable space too! Now that Spring is right around the corner, it’s time to expand our living spaces from indoors to outdoors (hellelujah!!). Warmer temperatures, dining al fresco, and watching Mother Nature do what she does best? I’m down! Here are a few ideas for your outdoor living space, to keep it chic, easy, and affordable. Also, let’s take a minute to admire this incredible vintage-inspired fringed and scalloped umbrella, that makes me feel like I’m poolside in Palm Springs, ready for my next mimosa.
Ok, done admiring? Wonderful. Because I can’t wait to show you more…
Starting from scratch? I like to start with seating. These bistro chairs are on my list because they are so cute AND fold flat so they can be stored under a bed or in a small closet when they’re not being used (and they only cost $60!). They’re perfect for a tiny balcony or patio situation. They make me feel like I’m back in Italy, sipping a cappuccino, at a cute cafe, with sidewalk seating – buongiorno bella! Flexible pieces are great to have on hand, especially for petite outdoor areas. I love an ottoman or pouf that, with a tray on it, can double as a side table. And this one, with its banana leaves and playful, peeks of pink, is giving me all of the Springy plantastic vibes I need right now.
Oversized pillows are another easy way to get instant additional seating. Plus, I’m always down for any way to invite myself or others to kick off shoes and seriously chill out on the floor, and stare up at the sky for a spell! It’s good for the soul!
While enjoying a little staycation in that outdoor area, don’t forget about the plant babies! I like to create lush outdoor zones with potted plants sitting at different levels (here I used outdoor baskets, placed upside down, as plant stands to help to vary the height of the plants).
And, speaking of plants, when my indoor planties have the winter blues, and need some extra sun and attention, I like to bring them outside to keep me company. I pull off any dead leaves, check the soil, check for critters that like to hide on the undersides of the leaves, and give them a good, long drink of water! Plus, I don’t have to worry about getting any excess water all over my countertops – I just let my plants drain outside and take them back inside once they’re dry. Plant care tip: Don’t put tropical plant friends outside in the bright sun, because their leaves might get a sunburn… but, they do love a good spritz of mist so mist away, and they will feel like they’re back in the humid jungle, having their own stay-cation situation!
Spending some time outside with plants is a great way to freshen them up AND have some time to slow down, feel the breeze on your face, smell the wet soil, and get your hands a little dirty. I always feel rejuvenated after caring for my planties.
And this Spring, I’m serious about taking my Spring staycation feeling to the next level with a luxe lounge setup (without the luxe lounge price tag). This matching set of club chairs and loveseat is SUCH a good buy! They are the anchor of this space. The seating is substantial and comfy, but the footprint is small (perfect for small patios) and each piece is sturdy but also light enough to easily be moved around, making it easy to switch things up if you’re meeting up with friends al fresco at a safe distance. The coffee table is also a real stunner! It provides ample surface space for food, drinks, AND spoiler alert — it has hidden storage. The top comes off so you can store outdoor pillows or cushions in there if there is rain on the horizon (also, stellar hide-and-seek spot if you have any littles in your life).
There is one other secret to transforming any outdoor living space into a true staycation spot: BRING ON THE BLING! String lights, candles, lanterns — gold and brass accent — all things that sparkle. Twinkling elements, especially lights, add a bit of magic that makes eating a meal or having a drink outside feel really special. I’m obsessed with this oversized citronella candle — it’s smells amazing, keeps the bugs at bay, and adds a little warm glow to the atmosphere — plus it stayed lit during this whole photoshoot and (real talk) it was super windy!
Creating your ideal outdoor space is really about figuring out how to work with mama nature to enjoy her bounty, while still feeling comfy! Adding an umbrella for shade, cozy pillows and blankets to wrap up in for those cooler breezes, and lighting and accents that provide a warm glow as it gets dark.
Feeling inspired? Me too! Excuse me while I head to Target now to buy five more of those oversized citronella candles!
