If you’ve been hanging out at The Jungalow for long, you’ve probably seen Justina’s Cubby Cabinet Vertical Garden– it’s one of our favorites to this day- we always have fun changing up the plants and little details! So when we were struck with the idea to DIY a mini cubby cabinet garden, we got started on it right away–because the only thing cuter than cubbies full of plants are *tiny* cubbies full of *tiny* plants.
To make your own Mini Cubby Cabinet Vertical Garden you’ll need:
- A paint color of your choice (we used Glidden’s Coral Flower — yes that’s the same color we painted our hutch a couple of years back)
- A Paint brush
- Sandpaper
- Mini cubby cabinet (try searching “vintage mini spice cabinet” or check out our Etsy treasury)
- Mini succulents and cacti (we suggest using plants that don’t need frequent watering, succulents and cacti need water about about week – every other week–just make sure to let soil dry out between watering.)
- Mini tassel
How to:
Step 1. Once you’ve found your cubbies, cleanand lightly sand your cubby cabinet to remove dirt and rough up the surface to get it ready to paint.
Step 2. Paint the cabinet, painting each drawer inside and out.
Step 3. Cut just enough off the top of the plastic plant pots that it fits nicely inside the drawer. This will make it easier when it’s time to water- just pull each little plant out, then put it back once the water has drained off. Place each plant inside the drawers, playing with placement until they look good and don’t get in each other’s way.
Step 4. Add a tassel or two
Step 5. Display somewhere beautiful and enjoy! Don’t forget to consider how much sunlight your little plant friends will need! If you’ve used succulents or cacti, hang in a sunny spot — these guys love to catch their rays.

I’ve always had my eye on that large cubby cabinet! Such a fantastic idea. Now this is way more doable with the tiny cubby garden. Great DIY!

that would be really cute way to add a pop of color and life to a sunny apartment entry way (but probably not a good spot for the guest key)
