I remember pretty clearly the first time I landed on Holly Becker’s blog Decor8. I had just moved to NYC after living in Italy for seven years where I didn’t even have internet in my apartment–the concept of blogging was totally new to me. A friend sent me a link to Holly’s blog and said ‘I think you’ll like this.’ After clicking over, I was mesmerized by all of the pretty images, Holly’s friendly, accessible editorial voice and, well, the whole idea of a design blog in general. Decor8 rapidly became a favorite online destination of mine and was partially responsible for inspiring me to start a blog myself.
It is for that reason that I am really excited to be a part of the Decorate Workshop blog tour and share my review of Holly’s gorgeous new book with you all today.
Decorate Workshop demonstrates to readers how to go from a design vision into a polished room in eight basic steps. What I love most about the book is that it is designed to be interactive. It’s a work book, but even more than that it’s almostlike having a girlfriend who is a designer who is sharing the tricks of the trade with you in a very accessible way.
The look and feel of the book is similar to the blog (Holly’s simpatico voice is just as fun and informative on paper as it is online) only it has the added bonus of being able to engage you and make you think practically about your design projects. The section on budgeting your design project is especially helpful and an often neglected, but vital aspect of the design process.
The book is, of course, filled with tons of eye candy–pictures are by the super talented Debi Treolar. Another thing that impresses me about the book is that even though I think Holly and I vary stylistically (I think I’m a little crazier and more hippie/boho where Holly’s style is more modern, airy and sweet) there were so many images that I could relate to and found super inspiring (like this amazing bedroom pictured above). I think there is a little something for everyone here.
If you’ve just moved into a new place, or have a room that’s in need of a little TLC, but don’t even know where to start–I suggest you get your Decorate Workshop on. It’s a lot cheaper than hiring a designer, and a lot more fun than sitting on the floor in your new, empty living room, head spinning, trying to figure out how in the hell you’re gonna make your new home look all gorgeous.
