While shooting The New Boho Book, a few of the houses we shot used simple hardware store canvas drop cloths as curtains. I always liked the look of them. They let light shine through while maintaining privacy, and something about the weight of the fabric was perfect. So I picked up a drop cloth and decided that it would be worth it to try and tie-dye it and see what happened. While the dye (after washing) didn’t hold SUPER well (the canvas is not 100% cotton) I still love the look of my $10 curtain! (and yes, it’s the very same panel that we used as a table cloth for Ida’s birthday!) So it’s an idea that can work for table cloths, curtains, and even picnic blankets. Next time I might try indigo or even a turquoise. These are available for purchase starting this weekend! Email me for info!
It looks great! I think it might even be preferable that the dye didn’t hold super well.
I’m putting curtains over my closet soon and I’ve been on the fence about what colors and materials to use. I was ready to give up and go with plain white but seeing this opens up heaps of new ideas : ]

They look amazing. We use canvas drop cloths for a lot of things in our home, including covering our sofa & love seat!!
It looks awesome!! I really, really love it! We are needing something for our playroom window and this looks like such a unique and fun project. I’m a huge tie dye fan, so this will be perfect.
In my dying ventures, I’ve found using vinegar in the wash really helps “set” the dye and keep it from fading out as much. I don’t know if you used that with this project, but thought I’d mention it just in case. (In some cases, salt in the dye bath also helps retain a deeper pigment.) When I dye with RIT, I put salt in the dye bath and do vinegar in the first wash.

Actually, a Procion MX dye from Dharma Trading Co works fantastic on cottons. Soda ash fixes it, so easy. I am totally doing this! So amazing. Perfect for my 11 yr old tweens room.
