Today I am going to share the second part of the charity design project I’ve been worked on with my sister Faith, World Market and Volunteers of America. (If you missed part one you can find it here.) The upstairs of this townhouse was completely renovated, but just like the downstairs the home had zero personality. We were on a very limited budget and used our creativity to make the space look homey on a dime. The upstairs has two bedrooms, one bathroom and a weird little room that was too big for a closet (plus both bedrooms had ample closet space)–so coming up with a good solution for the small awkward room was tricky. But first, my favorite room in the house: the master bedroom…
Faith found these Moroccan lantern at a thrift shop–we used them as a jumping-off place for the design. We got a simple mattress and box-spring and instead on splurging on a headboard we decided to create the look of a headboard using negative space. The nightstands, reminiscent of Bamileke drum stools, are from World Market.
The bedding and jars on the bedside tables are from Target.
We found this vintage dresser on Craigslist. We created a little mirror gallery wall instead of splurging on a large mirror for above the dresser. I love the way you can see the headboard and accent colors reflected in the mirrors. The honeycomb lamp and shade are from World Market. I like how it ‘speaks’ to the side table with the similar shape and pattern.
And on into the hallway.
We painted the hallway green! So bold, I know–but we wanted to add a little POP! And that mirror? It’s insanely good, right?! And on the right you can see the little awkward room I mentioned before. We turned it into a little play area for the kiddos!
And then there is the kid’s room…This was a real challenge because we didn’t know the ages or genders of the kids–so we went for neutral, but not boring (which is not always easy).
The art was all donated from several artists including my 8-year old niece, Noa who made the origami pinwheels and Sister Golden Shop who donated the lovely framed watercolors, and Andria Green who donated the framed sun print pictured below. The bedding is from Ikea.

I hope I get more chances to participate in these types of projects in the future. It has been a real blessing to me and my family to be able to give back in this way.
Thank you for your time Judson, Fabrizio, Danae and Sarah.
