We are about 3/4 of the way done with remodeling the back half of our house and it’s official: we’ve gone bananas for arched niches. My (amazing) contractor just starts to laugh as I give him this crazy look and then ask him to put *another* arched niche into one of the walls that he has just finished drywalling–but he gets it done and it makes me so, so happy.
It’s a wonderful way to add some character to an awkward, boring wall. It’s also a great way to add just a little bit of extra storage space in a room that has very, very little storage space to begin with and virtually no where to place a book shelf. Of course, my inclination is to fill all these niches with plants, but we will eventually be adding shelves to them and using them to hold functional items as well.
The arched niches remind me of the amazing, all white, cavernous homes in Santorini that just ooze beachy-relaxation vibes. Our jungalow may not be on a hill overlooking the Aegean Sea, but if I can bring even a hint of that vibe to Frogtown, I’ll be one happy jungalista.
